Hey Jedi!! Welcome to the 6th edition of the Identity Jedi Newsletter. Henceforth known as
Ok some quick housekeeping items:
If you are loving the newsletter, please share! There's a referral program with free stuff!
THANK YOU for all the support, and please let me know what content you like, things you want to see more of. Inbox is open: [email protected]
Finally, a short tangent on why I created this newsletter. First I love identity. And I also hate identity. It's been the best toxic relationship of my life. For all it's complex problems and elegant solutions it can be the most beautiful and strange place ever. But past all of that I wanted to make sure that people had a place to get good, non biased information so that too can nerd out about identity. I've been doing this now for longer than I care to admit, and a mentor once told me there's no point in gaining knowledge if you're not going to share it. So this is me sharing.
But beyond that I I have some lofty goals I'd like to accomplish with this. I would love to be able to get you all behind the scenes looks at products, exclusive interviews with experts ( besides me of course) and discounts on conference passes, and more. So I figure if we build a big enough of following, I can start to negotiate this with the product companies of the world, and also be a voice for all of you. To be clear I'LL NEVER SELL THIS LIST to those companies. EVER. Instead they will have the privilege of having their interview, product review, etc placed in this newsletter and sent to you, the people.
So there you have it Jedi, my grand scheme, an evil plan to conquer the world.
Alright to the good stuff here's what we got this week:
UNCLE TOMMY B!
Bullish on Okta?
Hell hath no fury like an employee scorn
How do you deploy IAM?
Sayvint and One Identity announce some product updates.
What's happening this week
Thoma Bravo at it again
So what's another identity company to add to the mix. If you haven't heard yet, Uncle Tommy B bought ForgeRock this week for a whopping 2.3 Billion. Seriously, how much money do these guys have, and can they lend me some? But in all seriousness this adds to the hype that is going around in the identity industry. I've been on record as saying that I believe that they will try and combine some of these assets, but allow me to back track those comments just a little. If I take off my identity hat for a moment and put on my finance hat, TB is applying the oldest rule of investing. Buy low, sell high. The question remains. Are they done?
Better days ahead
Ok so FULL DISCLAIMER: This is in NO WAY FINANCIAL ADVICE. If you need that sort of thing, let's talk offline: This is mostly me trolling my Okta friends... lol. Look it's been a rough year for the markets in general, and tech especially. But some positive vibes for the Okta crew.
Hell Hath No FURY...
Like an employee scorn. Yeah not the way you thought that was going to go huh? Look if we have learned NOTHING else in the past decade, we know that the biggest risk for breach is third party identities, and former employees. People often tell employees not to burn bridges, well we should probably give employers that advice as well. Especially those employees who have access to sensitive applications and data. Just saying. The below article is the classic case of the Leaver problem. One of the first use cases you should be implementing in your IAM deployment is Joiner ( what access employees get when they start) and Leaver ( what access is turned off, when employees leave). Both of these should be automated and done within minutes. Especially the leaver process.
How do you delpoy IAM?
A quick article outlining the different ways to deploy IAM. This begs the question, what model are you using? If you answer on premsis, we're still friends, but I'm giving you a mean side

BIG SHOUT OUT to Chris Anderson for the love! Thank you so much for being an Identity Jedi! Now spread the word and get some merch! LOL. But seriously, thank you! And to all my fellow Jedi thank you as well. This is one of the highlights of my week, and I'm so glad that you all find it useful. Let's grow this thing to the MOON! So many amazingly cool things I want to do for this community. Identity Jedi Conference anyone? Imagine it!
Until next week, Be Kind to each other, Be Good to each other, Love each other.
