Let’s Get to the Good Stuff!

  • Cedar Fever: AWS Makes Cedar Open Source

  • The Revolution will be decentralized

  • Identity Security Maturity Models

The Revolution will be decentralized.

Lots of buzz going around about Decentralized Identity ( DI). What is it? What does it mean? How does it work? The article below gives a good primer on the subject and has some very informative rabbit hole links toward the end.

In short, DI is a different way of thinking about how we manage identity. It brings up important and heavy questions about who should store what data. How should data be protected, and how give owners of data absolute control, while giving users of data trust and verification? It’s absolutely fascinating, and the type of challenges we live for in tech.

Identity Security Maturity

Say that three times fast.

A good report from the crew over at Tech Target and their Enterprise Strategy Group. An in-depth look at the reach of identity security architectures within organizations. Some key highlights that stand out:

TL:DR; Multi-cloud is real; customers want one throat to choke, and identity and security tools need to work together. If only someone had been saying this for like the past 5 years.

61 % of corresponds use more than 3 Cloud Service Providers with 85% of respondents expecting to get there in the next 12 months

54 % of respondents prefer a platform-like approach with unified controls from fewer vendors

57% of organizations say the top two Identity Security integrations include IT and security solutions (IAM, SSO, etc.) and endpoint security solutions.

CEDAR Fever!

Last week AWS announced that the Cedar policy language and authorization engine would be open-source. Joining the likes of IDQL and Hexa by Strata.io.

A big shoutout to Sarah Cecchetti and her team at AWS!

Very interested to see how this and IDQL make waves over the next couple of years. With more companies approaching a multi-cloud model, the ability to manage authorization and policy across all providers will be huge. Combine what IDQL is doing with a Cedar, and you have a pretty robust solution if, you can manage it.

The Last Word

Keeping the topic going around decentralized identity, I think this is one of the important topics in the IAM industry right now. Because DI is a paradigm shift. We’ve built everything on top of a world where data is freely given by users, centralized, and owned by third parties. DI envisions a world where users control and manage their data. Let’s think about that for a minute. How does that work in a workforce identity use case? Specifcally onboarding. A new employee starts, and they bring their identity with them. Instead of filling out forms and having the employer collect and store the data, it’s verified upon onboarding and used when needed. Now a lot more is needed than just DI to make this happen. This means dynamic level authorization and verification of attributes is needed. What does that look like?

These are GOOD rabbit holes to go down, questions we must ask, and discussions we need to have. This is coming, people; no mistake about it.
