Back again like we never left! Welcome to the 5th edition of the Identity Jedi Newsletter, and also officially welcome to Fall. Now sit down the pumpkin spice latte and let's talk about identity.

  • It’s all about the suites

  • The future is diverse, and I love it!

  • API’s need love too

What's happening this week

The Suite Life

Not going to lie, hadn’t heard of SafePaas until this past week ( Sorry SafePaas),but what’s interesting is that it adds to the pattern that we all know is coming. Consolidate, and build a suite. Remember this quote, because I think you'll see variations of this for the next 18 months

Traditionally, identity governance processes have been carried out in silos. By combining IGA, AM, PAM, and access controls into one solution, our customers are decreasing their threat surface for bad actors to exploit. Converged IAM activities benefit customers by weaving together identity security, authentication, and access.

The Future is Diverse

And I for one love it! Stumbled across this very short but interesting article featuring "10 People that are shaping the future of breach prevention". Whether or not the initiatives and companies these people represent will actually help with breach prevention is less important to me. What I loved about this article is the diversity of the list. 4 out of 10 are women ( still low, but better than zero), one of them a black woman ( Jameeka Green Aaron). Look like it or not we've had a diversity problem in tech since it's existence, and it's something we can't afford to have going forward. Another superstar on this list is Gal Helemski ( Co-Founder, CTO PlainID). I've had the privilege of getting to know Gal over the years, and not only is she one of the smartest human beings walking this earth, she also has the vision and drive to make it happen. This is what we need in the tech field. New faces, taking us to new places.

Familiar problem, different area

Ok be honest. When you read this were you thinking to yourself, “This all sounds very familiar”. If you’ve had to deal with IAM projects at any level, specifically governance projects then it should. API Governance will be a thing in the next 3-5 years. It’s talked about here and there by API security vendors, and somewhat marketed, but I expect it to be a full part of the identity vocabulary soon. Not only that but the security vocabulary as well. Interesting times ahead friends.

A BIG SHOUTOUT to newsletter subscriber Adrian! Great meeting you at Navigate! Thanks for the support!

The theme for me this week has been IAM strategy. Whether conversations with customers or slack channel messages in IDPRO ( shameless plug) conversations this week at SailPoint Navigate, the topic has been strategy. I find it interesting that after 15 years, we’re still asking the same questions around management of the broader strategy. After this week, it almost feels like we’ve regressed a bit. We’ve gotten so used to our customers understanding the business need that we’ve gotten away for educating our customers and helping them solve their core problems.

Remember, friends, IAM is an ultramarathon. It’s an ongoing effort to introduce efficiency, compliance, and REDUCE RISK within your organization. To do that effectively, you HAVE to know the areas in which risk, compliance, and efficiency are essential for your business. We can't lose focus on how what we do in identity impacts the business because once we do, the fight becomes harder to secure funds. The push to do the right thing becomes secondary; frankly, this shit just starts to suck. Stay vigilant, friends.

Until next week, Be Kind to each other, Be Good to each other, Love each other.
