  • Is CIAM the next big thing?

  • The unexplored frontier of non-human identity

WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK

Delinea completes acquisition…now what?

First Authomize and now FastPath. With this recent news Delinea completes their transformation from PAM player, to Identity Security platform…right?

There is tons of potential for Delinea with these recent acquisitions, but now the hard work begins. They have a ton of technology to integrate and deliver in a seamless platform, but the potential to offer value to their customers is exciting. Integrated PAM and IGA use cases, detection of anomalies with automated responses..ooh yeah now we’re talking, but the question remains how long before we see these things?

If you’re a customer looking to modernize, swap, or implement for the first time an identity security platform, NOW is the time to really push vendors to show you their capabilities. It’s no longer a best-of-breed world, so don’t settle for best-of-breed features.

You’re move Delinea..the streets is watching

Is CIAM the next big thing?

Had a great conversation this week about CIAM and the future of where it’s headed. I’ve always been bullish on CIAM as being a true revenue generator for organizations. It’s exciting to think about having conversations with customers about how much money Identity can make them instead of how much it will cost them.

But it’s still not at the top of organizations' minds, and I’m curious as to why. As CISOs are taking on more responsibility when it comes to identity, I’m surprised that CIAM isn’t also coming under their purview as well. Maybe not complete ownership, but at least a stakeholder in discussions for how CIAM is approached.

I don’t think we’ve created the proper ecosystem for this identity niche to thrive. From GTM to partner delivery, thought leadership, etc. We should be screaming this from the rooftops about how identity can significantly affect an organization’s bottom line.

Right??

What say you?

Non-Human Identity

Those three words should send a shudder up every single CISO’s spine. It’s the conversation we don’t like to have, the trash we sweep under the rug, and the boogey man hiding in the closest. We’ve talked about the phrase “ Identity sprawl” for the past couple of years, and non-human identity is the area where the sprawl is the greatest. API-first application architectures and elastic computing environments enable us to create applications at speeds we’ve never seen before, but in doing so, we create webs ( yeah, WEBS) of access that goes untracked and unmanaged. And that my friends, means a gold-mine for bad actors to use and abuse.

Secrets, tokens, service accounts, oh my….

It’s a mess. And a scary one at that. I get it, many organizations are still trying to wrap their heads around the human identity problem and don’t have the cycles to even look the way of non-human, but I don’t think we can avoid this monster much longer.

“But Dave where do I even start!??”

Start having conversations with your devops, dev, and admins TODAY! How are they handling secrets, token management, service accounts, etc. The sooner you understand their process and how the operate, then you can start to put a strategy together of how to help them continue to operate in a managed environment.

It won’t be easy, it won’t be fun, but you’ll thank yourself later.

The Last Word

I grew up in Southern California full of sunshine, beaches, and earthquakes. By the time I was 9 I could tell you the different types of earthquakes, I knew where to go in case of an earthquake, and had been through several already. It was just a way of life. But for right coasters, earthquakes are only those things they see on TV or in movies…. until yesterday.

I was wrapping up a call in New York when I felt a familiar sway. A gentle rocking if you will, but I thought..this couldn’t be what I think it is…I”m in New York. Well turns out it was exactly what I thought it was. An earthquake. Not a big one. 4.7 on the old Richter scale, but it if you’ve never experienced one it doesn’t really matter..lol. The rest of the day was spent talking to different New Yorkers about their first earthquake experience while also trying to get to JFK and get home..lol.

Moral of the story…. there isn’t one just an interesting experience I wanted to share..lol. Have a great Saturday!
